Relay for Life in the Cove took place June 26 at Albright Church of the Brethren in Roaring Spring from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. The event included entertainment, raffles and a speech made by the ambassador.
Mindy Wagner is the chairperson for Relay for Life in Roaring Spring. She said that there were 44 survivors who signed up.
"Even though we aren't doing a walk, we still want to celebrate with everyone," she said.
Last year the group was not able to hold a celebration due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but still had a drive-thru meal. This year, survivors could stay and eat or take their food home.
All of the food had been donated by Ultimate Subs, Ritchey's Dairy, Shirley's Bakery and Davison Snacks. Albright Church also donated their building for the day.
The survivors were each given shirts donated by Dependable Garage Doors.
The ambassador of the event was Carol Oaks and was chosen by the committee. Oaks, who was diagnosed with melanoma in 2010 and breast cancer in 2018, gave a speech.
"Relay for Life represents hope," she said. "Those we lost won't be forgotten and those who survived will continue to be remembered."
Oaks thanked the committee, family, friends and the doctors who aided in helping her survive. She also quoted a line from the Bible that she said helped her stay strong.
"Lord, help me to remember that nothing is going to happen today that You and I together can't handle."
Survivors also had a chance to get their photo taken by Jenna Keith, who had helped in Relay for Life as a child.
"I am honored to have been asked to help," she said. "It is so good to see everyone.
A gallery of the photos will be available on her Facebook page, JVK Photography.
The Horseshoe Cloggers provided entertainment for the evening. Two of its members, Sandy and Darlene, were cancer survivors themselves.
This year marked the 20th year for Relay for Life in the Cove. Oaks said she was glad they were able to do something for the survivors.
"It brings everyone together and gives us a chance to enjoy everyone's company," she said. "I hope next year we can do even more."
