The matter was raised by President Rodney Green at the regular meeting Oct. 12. Allan J. Bassler, Publisher|Jul 30, 2020

  • The Herald Isn't 'Marxist.' I Promise.

    Allan J. Bassler|Jul 9, 2020

There are a couple of little birds in the Herald community who occasionally chirp to me about things people are saying about the Herald which those people are, for some reason, afraid to actually say to me, the Herald’s publisher. Since I have no way to directly respond to the people saying these things, I have to resort to these occasional general responses. (I would like to state that I do appreciate the “chirps” from the “little birds” and my use of these diminutive terms should in no way indicate that the little birds are small or incons...

  • Central High School Class of 2020

    Allan J. Bassler, Publisher|Jun 11, 2020

In some ways, Spring Cove's 2020 graduation ceremony on June 3 was normal. It was held outside. The weather cooperated beautifully. There were smiles and cheers and tearful parents. There were exuberant students and teachers struggling to keep their expressions on the "smile side" of happy. But in other ways, the graduation was like no other the district has ever seen. In order to conform to Pennsylvania's coronavirus-related gathering and social distancing restrictions, and maintain a safe...

  • Let's Keep the Tent Big and the Door Open

    Allan J. Bassler|May 14, 2020

By ALLAN J. BASSLER Publisher I had two calls last week that got me thinking. One person was upset that the Herald is publishing articles in Spanish. She didn’t accept my explanation that the Herald is publishing information about the coronavirus to help the Cove community stay safe. She couldn’t provide a coherent reason why publishing articles in Spanish is a bad thing, only saying that “This is the Cove.” While that’s indisputable, the caller didn’t seem to understand that providing information to people in the language they understand best...

  • Why the Articles in Spanish?

    Allan J. Bassler, Publisher|Apr 30, 2020

About a month ago, the Herald started publishing two articles per week in Spanish. We’ve gotten several calls and notes about the articles. Most of them, about 90 percent, have been congratulatory and supportive. A few have not. So I’m taking time today to explain why the Herald is publishing some stories in Spanish. First, let me address a bigger issue. A community bird sent me an email a few days ago asking if there had been a political change at the Herald. The bird said that it had heard in the community that the Herald had “slid to the l...

  • What I Understand So Far

    Allan J. Bassler, Publisher|Apr 16, 2020

Here’s what I understand so far about the coronavirus and COVID-19: COVID-19 lasts longer than seasonal flu If you are affected by the virus and acquire COVID-19, the duration of your illness is generally longer than that of the seasonal flu. My understanding is that it lasts about two weeks, compared to three to five days for the normal flu. Note that the virus that we are all concerned about right now is called novel coronavirus, with “Novel” meaning “new.” The disease that the coronavirus causes is called COVID-19, which is an abbreviatio...

  • The Herald is Hanging On – Still

    Allan J. Bassler, Publisher|Apr 16, 2020

First of all, thank you very much to all of you who have purchased subscriptions to the Herald recently. Several subscribers have added to their Herald subscriptions, helping us keep the newspaper going in these tough times. As I explained last week, the Herald survives on subscriptions and advertisements purchased by local businesses. Since many local business are closed, they’ve stopped advertising. That means that the Herald’s primary revenue source has dried up. If we’re going to produce the Herald each week, we still have to pay our staff...

    Allan J. Bassler, Publisher|Apr 9, 2020

I was smart enough to get out of graduate school alive, but I've never been one with a quick wit. So it often takes me a while to puzzle through things. With the flood of information coming out about the coronavirus and the various reactions, I often hear and listen but don't comprehend. Then, hours or days later, I have an "aha!" moment and everything falls into place and makes sense. When things do fall into place, suddenly certain things become clear and they make sense. • The Herald is Hanging On – For Now

    Allan J. Bassler, Publisher|Apr 2, 2020

For an industry that is based on telling people what’s going on right now, the news media is sometimes not very good at looking ahead. We here at the Herald are trying to look ahead, but it’s hard to bring things into focus. One thing is clear – the restrictions on activities because of the coronavirus spread are hitting home. The Herald depends upon local advertising to pay its bills. What we charge for a year’s subscription to the Herald ($40 locally) doesn’t come close to paying the full cost of getting a Herald to your doorstep. Our best... Full story

    Allan J. Bassler, Publisher|Apr 2, 2020

As Williamsburg, the Cove and community journalism changes, the Herald must change with them. One of the changes that we are making is to wrap the Williamsburg calendar into the Cove Calendar. We’re trying to simplify and clarify the Herald’s journalism offerings both in print and online. This is necessary for several reasons. One is that local advertisers are becoming hard to find. This isn’t just a result of the coronavirus. This is a much different issue and has been going on for a longer time. The real problem The problem is that some...

  • Please. Stop Panic Buying.

    Allan J. Bassler|Mar 26, 2020

By ALLAN J. BASSLER Publisher Can we please stop panic buying? My daughter Helena and I were making the rounds last week, just as the first “quit going anywhere” order came down. We were looking for some basics for the weekend ahead: Milk, bread, eggs, frozen pizzas. We thought we’d dash into a local grocery store, pick up what we needed and be on our way in minutes. I see now that we were fools. Instead of the usual rows of shelves stocked in the good old American way with a tremendous variety of colorful products, we found row after row o...

  • Coronavirus: It's Not About You

    Allan J. Bassler|Mar 26, 2020

It's impossible to get away from news about the Coronavirus and Covid-19 these days. But strangely enough as we are immersed in information, reliable information is still hard to find. For example, some information is circulating on social media stating that the virus lives in the throat of an infected human before it moves to the lungs and can therefore be killed by gargling with salt water. I have encountered no medical experts who agree with this and have read several who have stated flatly that the information about salt water is not true....
