  • "Ho Ho Ho"

    GEORGE DEMPSIE, For the Herald|Dec 23, 2021

Note: The author of this editorial would like to alert readers that this is for parents only. It should not be read by or to little ones. My mind was made up. Being a mature second grader, I decided that I no longer believed in Santa Claus. The conversations amongst my classmates in the cafeteria had swayed me and I had finally given in to rational thought. There was simply no way Santa Claus could be both at J.C. Penney’s AND Mason’s department store at the same time! There would be no more cookies and milk left on the kitchen table for fut...

  • Who Is Our Neighbor?

    GEORGE DEMPSIE, For the Herald|Aug 5, 2021

When I visit the public library in Williamsburg, the beautiful stained glass windows bring back fond memories. The building was formerly the Presbyterian Church where my family and I worshiped. I can still hear Irene Miller playing the Sunday morning chimes as they echoed throughout our neighborhood. Coming of age in the ’70s when church membership waned due to an aging population, I was one of the youngest members. I wore many hats as a young Christian in a small church. I was a Sunday school teacher, collected the offering, provided s...

  • Other Voices

    GEORGE DEMPSIE, For the Herald|Apr 22, 2021

When I was 5 years old, in June of 1967, we got a new addition to our family. Not a new brother or sister, but our first dog. To an only child, it was like having a new sibling. The puppy was part Chihuahua and part rat terrier. It was so little that he easily fit into the palms of my dad’s hands. With his light tan coat, large ears, and big, soft brown eyes, he looked like a fawn as I held him close and christened him “Tiny.” Tiny and I became practically inseparable. I developed a separation anxiety and was afraid he would run away. It was a...

  • A Lenten Reflection

    GEORGE DEMPSIE|Mar 11, 2021

At the beginning of Lent this year, my Lutheran pastor uttered the familiar line at our Zoom Ash Wednesday service – “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” Another minister, the Rev. Jenny Phillips, a Methodist, writes that basically, an alternative way to translate the Hebrew word adama – “dust” in Genesis 2:7 – is “earth.” “Remember that you are earth, and to earth you shall return.” In this case, we are made of the same substance as the earth, and so our fates are bound together. I strongly believe that we are called to...

  • Rolling Back Emissions Standards is Not Good for the Country

    GEORGE DEMPSIE|Apr 23, 2020

My saddest life experience was watching my mother on oxygen the last seven years of her life, struggling for breath from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). After developing asthma, I was more than alarmed this week when the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), as directed by the current administration, announced plans to roll back the Clean Car Emissions Standards, which will greatly weaken the Clean Air Act. What a twisted way for them to honor the 50th anniversary of Earth Day in 2020. I find the timing of this rollback...
