My family and I had our first cookout of the season last Sunday that was highlighted with beer can chicken, parmesan potatoes, salad and strawberry cheesecake poke cake. This inspired my article this week – two recipes that you can take to any Memorial Day picnic. KATHY MELLOTT, For the Herald|May 19, 2022

Sunny days and warm breezes are making the garden soil pliable and ready for planting, but despite the calendar, an unexpected cold snap has brought more than one basil, tomato or cucumber plant to an early demise. Planting time is something I struggle with annually, despite the advice received years ago from an Old Order Mennonite friend. Lydia Zimmerman, who more than five decades ago started what is now Spring Farm Greenhouse just outside Curryville, said to follow the moon for spring...

  • Future of Deer Management Clouded by Coming Steep Decline in Hunter Numbers

    May 19, 2022

Because so many deer hunters are aging out of the sport — and new hunters are not being recruited to replace them — deer management strategies will need to change to manage populations of whitetails in many states. That is the conclusion of Penn State’s Duane Diefenbach, one of the leading white-tailed deer researchers in the country. He suggests that demographic trends of big-game hunters will dictate that wildlife agencies consider modified, or completely new, regulations to manage white-tailed deer populations. “Recreational deer hunting...

  • Morel Time Nearing End

    May 19, 2022

After the first day of gobbler season had ended, several people told me I could concentrate on fly-fishing for the rest of the month. One of these was my son, Bob. However, he added, "You can go looking for mushrooms, too. You'll have time to find them now." I laughed at that comment, having tried several times to learn to find mushrooms, properly named morels, but having these attempts end in abject failure. One spring about 10 years ago, I found more than 40 morels in one morning. At that...

Her first win was against Mattea Roach, a Canadian contestant who had a 23-day win streak. Because Jeopardy! films a week's worth of episodes in a day, Maurer knew she would be up against a "Jeopardy! giant." Maurer sat through four other games and watched Roach compete. "Every time someone new went up, it was like 'Is this going to end?'"...

  • Rising Fuel Costs Forcing Local Fire Departments to Conserve

    RICK BOSTON, Staff Writer|May 19, 2022

Rising fuel costs have forced volunteer fire departments to make some changes they hope are temporary. With diesel now at over $6 a gallon, some departments have elected to not provide pool-filling services this summer. The Freedom Township Volunteer Fire Company has decided that it will not be offering pool-filling services this year due to the rising cost of fuel. “It’s not a decision we wanted to make, but with the cost of fuel we just can’t do it this year,” said Chief Ron Henry. Henry said the trucks need to be fueled no matter how hig...

  • A Cove State of Mind

    ANNA BAUGHMAN, Editor|May 19, 2022

The moving of the desks I grew up in a household where when one needed help, 10 jumped up to volunteer. Where I live has always allowed that to be the case: all of my aunts, uncles and cousins on my mother’s side live on the same block in Altoona. Though many have moved away – including those in my own house – I can still send out an SOS, and multiple people will come running to assist. This was proven two weeks ago, when I decided that I wanted our new desks at the new Herald office to be assembled well before our move (which is taking place...

After leaving the pub with friends the teenagers head to a large country estate for an after-hours party. Fifteen months later, there is still...

  • Jack Bolger was Celebrated Boxer at Penn State

    JAMES WENTZ, For the Herald|May 19, 2022

John C. “Jack” Bolger was a funeral director in Martinsburg and Williamsburg starting in the 1950s. He established the Bolger Funeral Home that was passed along to his son, John K. A recent newspaper article about a former varsity boxer at Penn State reminded me of Jack Bolger’s prowess in the ring while representing the Nittany Lions before his graduation in 1950. Bolger excelled in the sport before it was termi...
