  • Op-Ed: Setting the Record Straight

    Sen. Judy Ward, R-30|Aug 4, 2022

Over the past few weeks, my Senate colleagues have had to continually correct false and misleading statements regarding the recently passed Senate Bill 106. The women had learned to work in the factories to help the “Tommies.” The jobs required the women to work with harsh chemicals. Often their skin and hair would turn yellow from exposure to the chemicals. These women were called “Canary Girls.” She was greeted by one of those girls, Tilly Lockhar...

  • Walking Down Memory Lane

    Grace Hamilton|Aug 4, 2022

As we take my memory tour through the village of Curryville, we come to the first residence after Burget’s Garage, the Gartland house. Eva and Harold Gartland had a son, Gary. They had a ping pong table on their second floor. I liked Gary but wasn’t sure about being alone with a boy I liked, so didn’t go there too often even though I loved to play ping pong. A road went back beside the Gartlands to the Hinish home and orchard. They had four boys, Dean, Bernard, Joe and Wayne. I liked Bernard. He...

Hall, a well known and highly successful physician of Altoona, died at his home. Dr. Hall was born in Montour county, June 22, 1845, and was prominent in Grand Army circles. Aug 4, 2022

Herald of Aug. 11, 1922 Attendance at the Farmers’ picnic at Henrietta was estimated between 6,000-7,000 people, but that was not as large a crowd as before. The aeroplane was a great feature, and the Century Liniment man from Lititz was a drawing card, as was the ball game. Midday rain spoiled it all. More applications for tetanus antitoxin were made to care for Fourth of July accidents across Pennsylvania this summer than in any of the last five years. Commissioner of Health Edward Martin believed the increased demand was not so much b...

  • Dancing in the Street

    Linda Weko|Aug 4, 2022

Let’s meet David today, the great grandson of Ruth. In 2 Samuel we meet him as a young king as he rises from shepherd boy to shepherding king. The reign of Saul had been oppressive. The elders and David came together. The tribes recognized that they were the same bone and flesh. Their collective memory sees Hebron as a place of encounter with God. We probably all know David better as a shepherd boy. He loved being outside with his sheep. His heart was good; he showed obedience; he had a way w...

  • Thought for the Week

    Pastor Earl Herr|Aug 4, 2022

Much preaching/teaching today is focused on the New Testament. I am certainly not opposed to that. I am glad for those who preach and teach truth and utilize the New Testament to do it. But I'd like to take some time to look at the nuggets of truth found in the Old Testament. I want to use these next "Thoughts" to examine tiny segments of the Old Testament. I plan to start with Isaiah and perhaps spend five weeks or so there before moving on. Most certainly no one can exhaust such a magnificent...
