  • My Kid Brother Was A Marine

    Nov 27, 2019

18 was a life-changing year for me. My baby brother came into the world weighing a whopping 10 pounds. He was named Jay Lloyd after his two grandfathers. My brother was born with four definite attributes. He is funny, tough, has a tender heart and is stubborn. It was the stubbornness that got him into the U.S. Marine Corps. When our dad refused to help him get a motorcycle, he became a leatherneck. By the time he graduated in the class of 1962 from NBC high school, I was married and had my...

Lighthouse Beach is a s...

  • Letter to the Editor

    Nov 27, 2019

To the Editor: In reference to the article on Page A-6 of the Nov. 21, 2019, edition of the Herald about the Commonwealth of Pa. considering allowing municipal police officers to use radar for vehicle speed-limit enforcement, sadly, the speed kills myth is alive and well in Pennsylvania. A real 25-state analysis was done of National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) data, which showed that 1.6 percent of crashes are caused by excessive speed. Barely above zero, then. Nowhere does anyone ever put into a bill that speed limits must be...

Martinsburg Methodists voted on the question of women being admitted as lay delegates to the general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Exhibits of corn have been coming in and have been placed in the First National Bank of that place for more than a month. A great deal of interest has developed in the townships tributary to Williamsburg and the exhibit will probably be one of the largest of its kind ever held in the county. Directions for choosing the exhibit, as well as rules governing the awarding of prizes have been sent to several hundred...

    Nov 27, 2019

Herald of Nov. 30, 1944 The battlefront was brought to the home front in the Cove in a startling and horrible manner Sunday evening when an Army-Navy “Helldiver” fell to the earth a mile east of Martinsburg and in the resultant explosion went into thousands of fragments and three men on board were blown to bits. The plane which was one of the Army’s high-diving bombing type, single motor, had left the Columbus airport earlier in the afternoon. It was being taken to the Middletown air base near Harrisburg. It is somewhat of an irony that the p...

Herald of Nov. 25, 1969 The Blair County Children’s Home at Williamsburg may be continued in operation – if plans can be worked out to make it a regional rather than a Blair County facility. For several years the operation of the home has been threatened by high costs and by the fact that the state Welfare Department favors the use of foster homes for children. It has been brought out in discussions before county commissioners that it costs $3,300 a year to keep one child in the Williamsburg institution, while the same child could be kept in a...

    Nov 27, 2019

Herald of Nov. 25 2009 The yield of corn per acre is up over last year, according to area mill managers, but the drying season has left farmers in a quandary. In normal years when warm, sunny days would take care of drying corn on a stalk, the field harvest would be complete by Thanksgiving. However, a damp, cool process, pushed the close of the season to December. There are plenty of fields standing in corn while farmers try to wait out Mother Nature. The alternative is to have the corn, carrying a much higher percentage of moisture this year,...

  • Spotted Lanternfly on Christmas Trees is Minimal

    Nov 27, 2019

Folks worried that the spotted lanternfly will put a “bah humbug” into their holiday by taking up residence in their live Christmas tree should toss those concerns to the side like used wrapping paper, according to Penn State Extension experts. “Real trees are part of an outdoor ecosystem, and there is always a chance that insects may be brought indoors with a tree, and the spotted lanternfly is no exception,” said Tanner Delvalle, a horticulture extension educator based in Berks and Schuylkill counties. “However, Christmas trees are not a pre...

  • Pa. Readies for Deer Season

    Nov 27, 2019

A Saturday opener for the firearms deer season and the possibility of more older bucks throughout the Commonwealth have many Pennsylvanians excited about Nov. 30 and the weeks to follow. Last year’s firearms deer season saw rainy weather nearly statewide throughout much of the opening day. But even then, 30 percent of the antlered deer harvested in the 2018-19 firearms season were taken on opening day. It was the best day of the season for buck harvest. It’s likely that opening day will continue to be the best for buck harvest this year, whe...

  • The Sportsman's Corner

    RICHARD TATE, Correspondent|Nov 27, 2019

Saturday (Nov. 30) is the opening day of the rifle deer season. It's the first time rifle deer season has opened on a Saturday since I began hunting. During my years in the woods, deer season has changed dramatically. Prior to 2002 lots of deer lived on publicly accessible hunting lands and provided exciting sport for sportsmen of average means. Not anymore. Instead, with the draconian deer decimation policy developed by Gary Alt and his minions at the PGC, the deer population on Pennsylvania's...

  • Bear Harvest Nears Record in Pa.

    Nov 27, 2019

Bear hunters started Pennsylvania’s statewide four-day black bear season last Saturday with good weather and a preliminary harvest of 1,015 black bears. Over the past two years, bear hunters have had some bad luck with weather, which has held down the harvest in Pennsylvania and helped maintain a bear population of around 20,000. But this year, bear hunters are off to a fine start in Penn’s Woods. Although the 2019 opening-day harvest is lower than last year’s – 1,241 bears, it raises the total Pennsylvania bear harvest to 2,886 when combined w...

  • Old Order Mennonite Memoirs

    Roseann Zimmerman, Correspondent|Nov 27, 2019

As we approach our shortest day, we seem to have a lot of night. Darkness greets us in the morning and beats us to our beds. In November's nights are sounds of rustling leaves, dry and frozen, scampering as on tiny feet on my brick patio floor, rushing eagerly to some leeward corner. In the darkness, Chloe barks frantically till her sleepy master comes to investigate and to reassure her that a gray fox on the picnic table won't harm her because it is dead. In a November night, coyote yelps...

  • Not Your Typical Church Lady

    Kelly Baker, Correspondent|Nov 27, 2019

The season of Advent is on its way. During Advent, as traditionally taught, we focus on peace, hope, joy, and Love. It only makes sense that gratitude and thanksgiving should precede that time. Much like John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus, we need to have this time of counting our blessings so that we can truly prepare to enter the time of celebration that is about to come. A grateful heart is open to joy and blessings. You know the saying "The rich get richer?" Well, the blessed get...

  • Thought for the Week

    Pastor Earl Herr, Correspondent|Nov 27, 2019

Scriptures to Read: Psalm 92:1 Psalm 100:4 Psalm 107:1 Ephesians 5:20 Colossians 4:2 Psalm 8:1-9 II Peter 3:9-15 This should be Thanksgiving Week. I hope you will take some time to express thanks. Of course it is great when you give thanks to people who love you, serve you, bless you, minister to you. But I am more concerned that we take time to give thanks to God. I'd like to see us express our thanks in two ways. First, give thanks to God for what He has done for us, and for what He has given...
