Central High School senior Kira Trexler had her chance to shine on a national level. The 17-year-old soccer player had a chance to play the game of Futsal for the Tampa Bay Rowdies. She played at the United Futsal National Showcase and the International World Championship that was held in Orlando, Fla. Trexler said that she had this connection with Marcello Antonelli, who was a pro-club coach for the Riverhounds in Pittsburgh. He also coached Orlando. He had this camp for my high school team,...

“The only good snake is a dead snake.” This was a commonly held belief when I was young and still holds true for many people. This is especially true of rattlesnakes. On one of our recent evening drives, Donna, Sage (her dog), and I spotted a dead rattlesnake along a rural road. It was only a hundred yards from a farmhouse. Donna remarked, “That’s way too close for comfort for the landowner.” She had grown up on a farm, and she has no ill will toward rattlers. “But, when I was young,” she said, “we had a couple get within 50 yards of our house....

In previous columns I have noted that Aiden Dively, 14, of East Freedom, has placed highly in national turkey calling championships. He recently struck gold in his first US Open Turkey Calling Championship in Louisiana. Dively participated in several competitions. On Friday, the first day of the event, Aiden and his father, Jake, made the finals in the friction-calling championship. They were a part of making history by being one of the only two father-son duos to make the finals on Friday. On Saturday, Aiden participated in three events: the...

Martinsburg resident Kay Weyant was extra excited this year for the 2024 Summer Olympic Games. Because for this year's games, her granddaughter competed in them. From Sarasota, Florida, 22-year-old Emma Weyant has been swimming since she was about five. Over the years, Weyant has won numerous awards, broken records, and claimed championship titles. She is a recent graduate of the University of Florida where she was a student athlete. This isn't the first time she has represented the US in the...
With bowhunting and crossbow-hunting for deer not getting underway for a couple of months, most archers are sitting back as they deal with the heat of summer. However, this is not true of all of them. Some dedicated archers are making sure their bows and crossbows are tuned up and are ready to go. Not only are they flinging a few arrows and bolts at backyard targets; some are traveling to 3-D shooting ranges so that they can refine their ability to judge shooting distances in the woods. These are the archers who want to be certain that they mak...
Pennsylvania’s Independent Fiscal Office (IFO) released studies on the economic impact of the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies on their respective cities. After reviewing the reports, Reps. Tim Bonner (R-Mercer/Butler) and Jim Gregory (R-Blair) say the Pirate’s organization needs to step up to the plate to ensure that its fans and taxpayers across the Commonwealth get the return on their investment they deserve. In the early 2000s, the Pittsburgh Pirates received $75 million in state grant funding for the land and con...

Several Cove area high school softball players were named to the Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association All-State Team. Being selected to the first team was Claysburg-Kimmel senior Emalee Cavender, who was picked as a first team utility player in Class 1A. She...

I recently re-read the late Jim Bashline’s “Night Fishing for Trout,” a fly-fishing book published in 1973. Bashline’s book was unique since it was a departure from the usual treatises about matching fly hatches during daylight hours. I probably should not have re-read the book since it reminded me that I have not fly-fished for trout after dark for a number of years. Bashline’s tales of landing huge trout after dark, mostly from the Goodsell Pool near Coudersport (now a concrete ditch), made me think about rigging up some wet flies and sally...
With hunters now purchasing their hunting licenses and their antlerless deer tags, it might be a good time to take a look at last year’s Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) harvest estimates. Based on a total of 134,000 harvest reports from Pennsylvania hunters, the PGC deer biologists have come up with a total harvest of 430,010 animals for the 2023-2024 deer-hunting seasons. This includes an estimated 171,600 bucks and 258,410 antlerless deer for the year. As you can see, the PGC biologists have essentially tripled the reported harvest. Their...

Last weekend, a club soccer team based in the Cove traveled east to Wildwood, New Jersey to compete in their Beach Blast Sand Soccer Tournament. It was an open tournament hosted by the Cape Express Soccer Club, and hundreds of teams from the east coast were invited to come and play on the sandy beach. The Dragons FC soccer team, from June 29 to June 30, competed in three games in the U19 male division. Each game was five against five. The tournament also had a "no shoes allowed" policy, so...
One of the most horrifying statistics I have run into during the past couple of years is that there are three billion (yes, billion) fewer birds in America than there were fifty years ago. I do not know exactly how researchers have arrived at this figure, but I do know that I encounter fewer birds afield than I once did. There are many reasons for the decline of bird numbers. Various chemicals and pesticides that have been introduced into the environment have taken their toll, either directly or through the plants and bugs that birds ingest....

The Pennsylvania Game Commission is seeking input from the public in surveying wild turkeys this summer. The Annual Pennsylvania Wild Turkey Sighting Survey runs July 1 through Aug. 31. Public participation is important for turkey population management. Survey data allow the agency to determine total wild turkey productivity and compare long-term reproductive success within Pennsylvania and across states, as this is a standard methodology used across the country. Data also are used in the turkey population model to track population trends....
Many years ago, sportswriter Phil Musik penned columns where he told us, “Here’s what I think, I think.” Anyhow, here’s my version of Musik’s idea. The Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) has control of the state’s deer herd and other game animals. In fact, I have occasionally read that the state owns the deer herd. Well, if that’s the case, what’s to prevent landowners from charging the PGC rent for the deer that inhabit their properties? This only makes sense, since the landowners, who are often farmers, essentially feed the deer and provide s...
The Hollidaysburg Youth Summer Baseball League hosted their annual home run derby on Sunday, June 23 at their little league complex. To be eligible for the contest, a 50/70 player must hit an over the fence home run during the season. Over 20 youth participated in the event. Colby Gojmerac (center), a rising 8th grader at Spring Cove Middle School won the championship contest with 10 home runs on 15 attempts in the final round. Landon Ketner (right), a rising 8th grader at Hollidaysburg Jr....
Next Monday, June 24, at 8:00 a.m., the first resident Pennsylvania antlerless deer hunting licenses go on sale in WMUs 1B, 2G, and 3A. There will probably be a rush for them, since antlerless licenses sell quickly in these WMUs. However, antlerless licenses will not go on sale in the other 19 Wildlife Management Units until Thursday, June 27, at 8:00 a.m., a week from now. According to the Pennsylvania Game Commission, resident hunters in these 19 WMUs will be guaranteed an antlerless license if they purchase it before July 8. This seems to...
The Pennsylvania Game Commission today announced the expansion of several Chronic Wasting Disease Management Areas (DMAs) due to new detections of the disease. Disease Management Area 2 (DMA 2) will expand following the detection of CWD in several road-killed deer along the eastern boundary. The boundary will generally expand east to state Route 94, east along U.S. Route 30, and north along the west shore of the Susquehanna River to meet the current boundary. DMA 2 is located in southcentral Pennsylvania and includes all or portions of Adams,...

Hunting and furtaker licenses for the 2023-24 license year will expire June 30, and hunters will need new licenses for the 2024-25 license year to begin July 1. New licenses go on sale Monday, June 24, and hunters no longer need to purchase a general license before getting an antlerless deer license – they can be purchased at the same time, anywhere licenses are sold. This year, when licenses go on sale at 8 a.m. on June 24, antlerless deer licenses will be available for only three Wildlife Management Units where demand is highest – WMUs 1B,...
Two of Williamsburg High School’s greatest basketball players from the “Golden Age” of boys’ basketball during the 1960s recently reminded me that we are now in the fourth quarter of our lives. The first of these had just had a stent installed to help with his blood flow. He said, “We do what we have to do so that we can do what we want to do. After all, we’re in the fourth quarter now.” The man has exercised religiously his entire life and has eaten healthy foods. He has never abused himself with tobacco or alcohol, yet he needed the st...

In the District 6 Class AAA Baseball championship, the Central Scarlet Dragons faced off against the Central Cambria Red Devils. A close early game left the score tied at two apiece after the third inning, when the Red Devils took off in the fourth with four runs scored. After the Dragons were able to cut their opponents’ lead to only three runs with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, the Red Devils responded by pushing the lead back up to five runs in the top of the sixth by scoring two more runs. The Dragons were able to s...

When Donna and I moved into our home many years ago, Charles Hauser, our next-door-neighbor, wondered why I left my lovely wife at home for a couple hours nearly every evening from early May until early June. “She’s alone at that house,” he scolded. “You need to be more attentive.” I tried to explain to Charles that I was traveling to one of the local creeks to fly-fish for trout during what fly-fishermen call the evening hatch. “That’s the best time for dry-fly fishing to rising trout,” I said. However, he did not really understand what...

The Central Scarlet Dragon Baseball team faced the Huntingdon Bearcats in the District Six Class AAA semifinal game, earning their spot in the district championship match after a 10-0, five inning mercy-rule victory for the Dragons. Despite the scoreboard coming up empty for the Dragons in the opening two innings of the night, things really picked up when Jay Hoenstine hit a three-run triple. The following inning brought one run for the Dragons, but they truly cemented their victory in the bottom of the fifth with five straight hits by Wyatt...

One recent weekend, Channel 10 News ran a story detailing that two Texas hunters had died from eating CWD-tainted venison. Since the Pennsylvania Game Commission (PGC) has told us that one of every three deer in our area is infected with Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) from the tests that the commission runs on samples of deer taken during hunting seasons and that are taken from road-killed deer, the possible transfer of CWD to humans is chilling. Being frightened by this possibility myself, I went to the Internet to locate the whole story. Two...

Recently I described the debacle that occurred during the opening day of the 2023 spring gobbler season when another hunter shot at gobblers that Bob, my son, had running our way. I also told you that Bob killed one in a difficult position the following Saturday. Unfortunately, my opening week of gobbler season had gone about as usual. As the “worst turkey hunter in the Cove,” I had a variety of excuses for not tagging a gobbler that week, including bad weather and several medical app...
