  • Pennsylvania Bear Seasons Hold Promise

    Oct 12, 2023

If you hunt Pennsylvania black bears, maybe for years without harvesting one, now is not the time to give up hope. It’s true the odds of tagging a bear can seem long. Only somewhere between 1.5 percent and 2.5 percent of bear license holders get a bear in any given year. But bears are again plentiful and widespread across Pennsylvania, with an estimated 15,000 roaming the woods. The 2023 seasons are long and varied, offering lots of opportunities, including hunting on three Sundays. And history shows there’s always reason for optimism. In 202...

  • Numerous Seasons To Open Saturday

    RICHARD TATE|Oct 12, 2023

Numerous hunting seasons open this Saturday (Oct. 14). At one time only small game seasons would come in on Saturday; but the PGC has expanded deer seasons, and one of them begins on Saturday. This is the statewide muzzleloader season. Only antlerless deer are legal during the one-week hunt that ends on Oct. 21. A special firearms season for antlerless deer begins in midweek, on Oct. 19. It also ends on the 21. This firearms season is for junior and senior license holders, mentored license holders, active-duty military members, and persons...

  • Dragon Football Narrowly Clings to Victory Over Rams

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Oct 12, 2023

After amassing a 28-0 halftime score on a cold and rainy night against the Penns Valley Rams, the second half was entirely scoreless for the Dragons. Defense was enough, however, to keep the Rams' score to a mere 14 points, ending the game with a winning score of 28-14 for Central. Midway through the first quarter, the Dragons began their first-half triumph with a 19-yard touchdown reception by Jack Dunn. A two-point conversion with a pass from Hunter Smith to Troy Butler left the score at 8-0 f...

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Oct 12, 2023

Northern Bedford County High School football coach Garry Black feasted on some crab legs for dinner Sunday after finding them on sale during a grocery run earlier that day. Black’s Black Panthers will be looking to feast on the teams with whom they’re competing for the District 5 Class 1A championship over the next few weeks. “Looking at where (Sept. 29 opponent) Tussey is at record-wise, starting last week with Meyersdale and going through North Star and Windber now, we’re all District 5 single-A and we’re going to be in some way shape or...

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Oct 5, 2023

With such a young football team, this season has been a learning experience for Juniata Valley, but the Green Hornets have been ahead of the curve, winning five of six outings. Still, each week is one of discovery. Last game, Coach Bill Musser found out how his Hornets would respond to a reality-check loss at West Branch, and they answered with a last-minute win over Moshannon Valley. This week, they’ll uncover more about themselves when they go on the road to play another Inter-County Conference North Division foe, Mount Union. “What we’ll fin...

  • Out of Commission

    Richard Tate|Oct 5, 2023

“You’re just a spoiled 73-year-old. You can go fishing any time you like. Donna never says anything to you about overdoing it,” various people have told me. “It wasn’t always like that,” I counter. “When we first got married, she’d often ask ‘Are you going fishing again?’ Now when I’m in her way around the house, she asks ‘Why don’t you go fishing?’” During a recent week, however, things did not work out well for me. The weather was nearly perfect for late-summer fishing. There was a rainy day that raised stream levels slightly, and several...

    RICHARD TATE|Sep 28, 2023

Saturday (Sept. 30) is the big day for crossbow and bow hunters, the day they have been dreaming about all summer. It is the opening day of the archery deer season. Bowhunters have been practicing with their equipment for months so that they can make competent, humane shots on deer. Members of the crossbow community have sighted in their crossbows, making sure their sighting systems are in working order and that their equipment is properly tuned. Many of these archers have erected stands in locations where they believe deer will be traveling....

  • Deja Vu

    RICHARD TATE|Sep 21, 2023

This past spring I wanted to take a photo of a special trout I had caught. After some maneuvering, the trout was in a perfect position for a photo, and I touched the camera button to get the photo. Unfortunately while maneuvering to get into position to snap the picture, I stepped onto the butt section of what is my favorite large-stream fly rod, crushing it. I had broken the tip section the year before; so when I finally received the replacement butt section this summer, the rod was essentially a new one. I had bought the rod “used”; but wit...

  • Central to Face Guilfoyle in Rare Match

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Sep 21, 2023

It might seem hard to believe, but, despite both teams’ success and proximity to one another, Central only has played Bishop Guilfoyle three times on the football field in the programs’ histories. That just makes it that much more special when the state contenders get together. “It’s kind of funny,” Scarlet Dragon junior lineman Caden Schenk said. “My dad and I were talking about it. We called it kind of our Super Bowl.” There definitely will be a lot on the line on Friday night when Schenk and his unbeaten Dragons entertain a Guilfoyle team li...

  • Squirrel Memories

    RICHARD TATE|Sep 7, 2023

Squirrel season’s Saturday start (Sept. 9) stirs up some interesting memories. The earliest of these are ones with my dad. When rabbit hunting went downhill and he closed his kennel of beagles, Dad decided to introduce me to hunting by chasing squirrels locally. We generally took two sporting arms: a .22 rifle for shots at stationary squirrels and a 20-gauge shotgun for shots at moving targets. Dad was essentially my “gunbearer,” as he tried to set me up to do all of the shooting. The first squirrel I ever shot was with the .22. I was prett...
