  • Central Ready To Face Old Rival

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Sep 7, 2023

A lot of people might be surprised how quickly the Central football team seems to have reloaded in the wake of the graduation of record-setting quarterback Jeff Hoenstine and wideout Eli Lingenfelter along with several other members of the receiving corps. Junior Eli Muthler isn't among them. "I haven't really thought about it," said Muthler, who stepped into Hoenstine's shoes this fall. "I just go out there and try to complete some passes and do what I needed to do." He's done a pretty good...

  • Lady Dragon Tennis Finds Two Victories

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Aug 31, 2023

In an away match against the Tyrone Lady Eagles and a home match against the Huntingdon Lady Bearcats, the Lady Dragon Tennis team took home two 5-0 victories to jump to a 2-0 record. Against the Eagles, Julia Ritchey won the first singles match with set scores of 6-1 and 6-0. Brooklyn Coppersmith lost in the first set, but came back with two scores of 7-6 and 6-4 for a win in the second singles match. Ashlynn Renner won the third singles match in a shutout with two set scores of 6-0. Zoe Grill and Kate Dunn paired for the first doubles match...

  • New Faces, Same Results: Dragon Football Dominates in Season Opener

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Aug 31, 2023

Facing off against the Bellefonte Red Raiders in their season opener, it was no surprise that the Dragons would start out a fresh season strong. A shutout for the Dragon defense combined with Central’s stunning offensive game paired well for a 49-0 overall victory. Though starting the game kicking off, the Dragon defense made quick work of the Raider offense. This allowed Central’s run game to plow down the field, ending with a one yard run from Hunter Smith for a Dragon touchdown with 7:44 remaining in the first quarter. The Dragon def...

  • Dragon Soccer Victorious

    BRADY ALBRIGHT, Student Correspondent|Aug 31, 2023

BOYS SOCCER Facing the Chestnut Ridge Lions, the Central Dragon Boys Soccer team cinched a 4-2 victory in their season opener. At 14:12 in the first half, Avery Campbell scored the first goal of the game assisted by Jacob Heuston. The Dragons then held off the Lions until 31:43 where Chestnut Ridge tied the game with a score of their own. Early in the second half, at 48:27, Alexander Eicher scored for the Dragons assisted by Logan Hummel. The Lions tied the game at 2-2 at 54:12 shortly after....

  • Dragon Golf Wins, Ties

    Aug 31, 2023

On Tuesday, Aug. 22, the Dragon golf team competed in matches in both Blair and Bedford counties. Three Dragon seniors competed in the Omni Bedford Springs High school invitational, and the Dragons' team score of 236 was good enough to earn a six stroke victory over Altoona (242). Hollidaysburg (255) was third, followed by Bedford (266). Nick Baum earned medalist honors with a 75, while Griffin Snowberger finished a shot back at 76. Zach Oakes carded an 85 to round out the scoring. The rest of t...

  • Hunting Begins Tomorrow

    RICHARD TATE|Aug 31, 2023

Hunting for doves and resident Canada geese begins tomorrow (Sept. 1) in Pennsylvania. The dove season, consisting of a Sept. 1 through Nov. 24 segment and a later one from Dec. 19 through Jan, 6, 2024, allows hunters to kill 15 doves per day, with a possession limit of 45. It would take a lot better shooter than I am to collect these numbers of birds. The daily hunt lasts from a half-hour before sunrise until sunset. In addition to a regular hunting license, a dove hunter must possess a Pennsylvania migratory bird license that may be...

  • Golden Tigers On Road to Redemption

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Aug 31, 2023

The 2022 Hollidaysburg Area High School football team paid out the nose for entering the year with few proven players, losing eight of its first nine games before ending the campaign by beating DuBois. Seven of those setbacks were by double digits. Most of the Golden Tigers who lived through that are back. And they’ve brought receipts. “This year, we have a lot more experience,” senior Drew Wyland said. “After how bad last year went for us and how demotivated we were getting, we’re a lot more pumped up this year. Everyone’s a lot more fired up....

  • NB, C-K Going Head to Head this Week

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Aug 31, 2023

A football player for Claysburg-Kimmel, a soccer player at Chestnut Ridge and someone very active in his church, C-K senior Elias Ritchey wears a lot of hats in the fall. "I definitely have to find a good balance," Ritchey said. Ritchey's hoping he can add a party hat after Friday night's game at Northern Bedford to celebrate a Bulldogs' upset victory over the state-ranked Black Panthers. Kickoff for the Inter-County Conference interdivisional clash at Panther Community Stadium is 7 p.m....

  • Green Hornets Young but Hopeful

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Aug 24, 2023

Most of Bill Musser’s Juniata Valley and Williamsburg football players this season aren’t old enough to drive. Musser, though, is handing them the keys to his Juniata Valley football program for the next few months. It’s a matter of necessity. Graduation has compounded with injury to decimate the starting lineup of last year’s District 6 Class 1A playoff team. The roster is primarily sophomores and freshmen, and many of those sophomores have barely gotten on the field, so it’s an experienced group, as well. The Green Hornet nickname is more a...

  • Central Golf Dominates

    Aug 24, 2023

The Central Dragon golf team traveled to Bellefonte on Tuesday, Aug. 15 for their first Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference matchup of the season. The Dragons, led by Nick Baum’s round of 74, came away with a victory over 6 area teams. With a team score of 314, Central cruised to a 20 stroke victory over second place Bishop Guilfoyle. Seniors Griffin Snowberger and Zach Oakes shot 77 and 78 respectively for the Dragons, while Cody Clapper chipped in with an 85. Brighton Barnes carded an 88 in his first match of the season. The team will t...

  • C-K Starting Season With All New Everything

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Aug 24, 2023

“New … And, Hopefully, Improved,” could be the marketing slogan if Claysburg-Kimmel High School decided to run an ad campaign touting its 2023 Bulldog football team. The Bulldogs will come out to a newly refurbished field when it opens the season on Friday against visiting Berlin Brothersvalley, with new head coach Chuck Kassick unleashing a new-style offense with a lot of new faces at the skill positions. That’s made for a lot of new optimism for a program trying to turn around a 1-9 campaign last fall. “I think this is the most amount of...

  • Anticipation

    RICHARD TATE|Aug 24, 2023

August is not at the top of the list of sportsmen’s favorite months. Eager bass fishermen are out making some good catches, and the few groundhog hunters who are still active are pursuing the “pasture grizzlies.” However, most sportsmen are in “sleep mode.” While in sleep mode, many sportsmen anticipate easing out of their torpor and into some active outdoor adventures. Probably the sportsmen who are most eagerly anticipating autumn are deer hunters, especially bow and crossbow hunters. Having acquired their special licenses, they are ready...

  • Panthers Hold Black and White Game

    LUCENE STEELE, For the Herald|Aug 24, 2023

Panther Stadium in Loysburg came alive this past Thursday evening as the 2023 Panther Football team took the field for the annual Black and White game. The evening was full of activities showcasing the students of NBC who will soon be an integral part of the Friday night lights for the Northern Bedford County School district. The evening also showcased the new stadium lights that were installed at Panther Stadium this summer. These state of the art lights with color changing features were...

  • NB Sticking With Last Year's Success

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Aug 24, 2023

If it’s not broke, don’t fix it. The Northern Bedford County High School football team isn’t broke. With starters back at 19 positions, the Black Panthers are far from it, in fact. They look just like last year’s 11-1 squad. No. It seems if anything is going to be broken this year, it’s going to be the Panthers’ opposition. Two seasons removed from making the PIAA Class 1A quarterfinals and 10 months away from a heartbreaking loss to Windber that denied it a return trip to states, Northern Bedford is setting a high bar for itself this season...

  • Claysburg-Kimmel Ready to Christen 2023 Season at Their Home Field

    PHILIP CMOR, For the Herald|Aug 24, 2023

Friday night will mark one of the biggest football games in Claysburg-Kimmel history. It won't even matter whether the Bulldogs can upend powerhouse conference newcomer Berlin Brothersvalley or not. The Bulldogs are coming home. "I think that everyone is super excited," senior left guard-defensive end Ethan Claycomb said. "We have been waiting so long. "It's finally here." After a couple of years of running loose - driving 20 minutes up I-99 to play home games in Hollidaysburg - C-K finally will...

  • Fooling Around

    RICH TATE|Aug 17, 2023

When you get to be a certain age (don’t ask me when), catching a bunch of fish becomes less important than it once was -- though you do want to catch some trout when fishing. Instead, you start to observe your surroundings, and sometimes you want to do things differently, just to fool around. During the past couple years, I have sometimes deviated from my usual fishing habits, just for the heck of it. Though I have not tried the popular new method of nymph-fishing called Euro nymphing, which its proponents say allows them to vacuum a stream b...

  • Some Wildlife Sightings

    RICHARD TATE|Aug 10, 2023

When in the outdoors, sportsmen observe various things. Let's start with some good things I have seen this year. Most sportsmen know ruffed grouse are having a rough time because of the devastating effects of West Nile Virus. Previous to this year, I had seen only one grouse in the past 10 years. I doubled that this year, which is not especially encouraging but is a slight improvement. The first of these grouse was one of the "tame" type the game commission wants people to report seeing so that...

Day two was a tough battle between him and his two other teammates, but Baum ended up capturing the title. Baum finished the tournament with one eagle and four birdies. Baum took his chances when...

  • Nothing Good to Say

    RICHARD TATE|Aug 3, 2023

My neighbor, Dr. Archie O. Logist, constantly evaluates my column. One recent afternoon he interrupted my lawn mowing to accost me. “Rich, you’re constantly criticizing the game commission. Don’t you have anything good to say about it?” “No. I once had great respect for the commission. But, it and its board members have pretty much thumbed their collective noses at sportsmen to satisfy non-sportsmen’s agendas. The list is extensive. “I have written about their disdain for sportsmen while catering to game hogs with their brown-and-dow...

  • A Tale of Three Skunks

    RICHARD TATE|Jul 27, 2023

Skunks are common animals, especially in town where they have many places to hide and where they have reliable food sources. They are beautiful animals with lovely fur coats. Unfortunately, they smell, well, like skunks. This past winter Donna had to let her little dog, Sage, out during the night to take care of “business.” However, after taking care of business, Sage was sprayed by a skunk before making it back into the house. Donna gathered some Dawn dishwashing liquid and other cleansers, and we de-scented the dog. Several rugs where we had...

  • A Day Late

    RICHARD TATE|Jul 20, 2023

When I was a young fisherman, the veterans of that long-ago time gradually began to accept me. After all, I was constantly on the stream and occasionally bumped into notable season-long fishermen like Michael “Pike” DiBartolome and Sam Lower, often bugging them about fishing strategies and times to be on the water. A few other “old timers” might not have always been truthful; but when DiBartolome or Lower told me something, it was trout-fishing gospel. One piece of advice these local legends shared more than once was to be on the water as soon...
