C-K to Host Reps from Rachel's Challenge

The Claysburg-Kimmel School District will host representatives from Rachel’s Challenge on Wednesday, Jan. 23.

In 1999, Rachel Scott became the first student killed in the Columbine (Colorado) High School shooting. Following her death, Rachel’s parents discovered several journals which gave an account of her secret mission of kindness and compassion toward her schoolmates.

Inspired by her choices, Rachel’s family and friends eventually started Rachel’s Challenge, a non-profit organization which has impacted more than 25 million students, teachers and community members since its formulation nearly 20 years ago.

Both high school and elementary students will be participating in age-appropriate assemblies. In the afternoon, select high school students will participate in facilitated seminars and activities with community members, staff and leaders.

The school district will adopt Rachel’s Challenge mission, making schools safer, more connected places where bullying and violence are replaced with kindness and respect; and where learning and teaching are awakened to their fullest.

Community Event

The school district also will host a community event starting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, in the high school auditorium. The speaker for the evening will be Larry Scott, Rachel’s uncle.

The recommended age to attend the community program is 12 and older, however, childcare will be available for those under 12 years of age. Contact Travis Leap (tleap@cksdbulldogs.com) or Denelle Diehl (ddiehl@cksdbulldogs.com) to reserve childcare.

A casual community reception and a light meal will follow the program. There is no cost to attend the program.

The Claysburg Education Foundation is sponsoring the Rachel’s Challenge events financially.
