Jennifer Adams and Brenda Wible, employees of BCO Mart in Martinsburg, could see a significant increase in pay of Gov. Tom Wolf's proposed minimum wage hike passes. Opponents of the hike say an increase could put the squeeze on small businesses as well as reduce the number of people seeking skilled trade careers.
According to the United States Department of Labor's Bureau of Statistics, there are 3,415,000 hourly paid workers in Pennsylvania. Of those, 43,000 earned the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour or less, making up 3.1 percent of hourly paid workers in the state.
A person making $7.25 per hour at a full-time job makes about $15,080 per year, which for a household of one is just above the federal poverty line of $12,490.
