Society Appreciative of Mansion Support

April 11, 2019

Dear Readers,

I would like to thank the members of the community who have supported the Royer Mansion site. Without the community’s support Royer Mansion would not exist today. I would like to personally thank our site managers for leading the charge to ensure Royer is more vibrant and enticing for patrons by the ongoing restoration and programing. Their hard work is evident to anyone who has recently visited the site. In addition, programs now being offered at Royer are more popular than ever and are proving to be part of a successful restoration/preservation & maintenance plan.

After the first event at Royer under the new direction of our site managers, we at the society realized the need to alleviate the parking and dependence on neighboring property. We are most grateful for their past parking allowances.

The Blair County Historical Society Inc. acquired Royer Mansion from the state along with 8 acres of former pasture and farm land, all of which became over-grown after 1960. Working with Woodbury Township and the Blair County Conservation District and using historic land-use guidelines similar to those utilized at Gettysburg Battlefield, we have determined that formerly cleared farmland would be the most suitable for new parking. To be clear, we are not talking a large parking space or paving. We are clearing a former portion of farmland to be used as a field in which to park.

The property at Royer Mansion is privately owned by the Blair County Historical Society, incorporated as a private 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation. While it is on the National Register of Historic Places along with our flagship location at Baker Mansion History Museum in Altoona, it is not public land. Access is restricted to patrons or those with permission as at all Blair County Historical Society properties due to liability concerns.

So, when you attend an event at Royer Mansion:

Are you safe? Yes, by having parking on the premises this eliminates parking on the neighboring property and crossing an extremely busy highway.

Who are you supporting? By attending events at Royer all proceeds go toward the preservation and maintenance of the Royer site. In addition, your support means you are keeping alive our local historical sites so our children can walk back in time to see our heritage. We learn from our past to prepare for our future. By supporting Royer Mansion and the Blair County Historical Society, future generations will have everything to gain.
