An attorney named Beers from Altoona was being sought in the Cove area after his wife reported him missing. He was last seen on March 23 in Martinsburg, where he registered at the hotel under his own name. The next day Attorney Beers bought a livery and rode away from town, and he had not been seen since. Mrs. Beers claimed that there were no domestic problems that would have driven her husband away from their Altoona home.
