Defense Dooms Lady Dragons in 2 Defeats

April 25, 2019

The Central Lady Dragon softball team lost two tough Mountain Conference games last week, dropping its record to 5-4 on the season.

Clearfield 4, CHS 1

Homestanding Clearfield scored once in the second inning and added three in the third. That’s all Clearfield would need as they held the Dragons to just one run in the 4-1 victory. Each team had only four hits but Central’s defense committed seven errors. Maddi Metzler drove home the Lady Dragon run in the seventh. Dylan Claycomb took the loss for Central.

PV 7, CHS 5

The Lady Dragons took leads throughout their game against visiting Penns Valley, but the Lady Rams scored five times in their final two at-bats to escape with a 7-5 victory. The Dragons had an 11-8 advantage in hits, but four errors again contributed to their loss. Dylan Claycomb ripped a home run, while Cam Feathers and Tori Longenecker added doubles. All three girls drove home runs along with Ashley Negley and Madison Benfer. Dylan Claycomb was saddled with the loss, although she fanned four and walked just two.

“Our defense left us down last week,” Central coach Jonathan Burkett said. “Eleven errors in two games is not acceptable. This will be our focus this week in practice. We also had trouble stringing our hits together. We had 15 runners on base against Penns Valley but stranded a high number of runners.”
