Lack of Hits Hurts CHS in 2 Setbacks

April 25, 2019

It turned out to be a tough week for the 7-5 Central Dragons baseball team as they fell twice on the road in Mountain League games. After losing a tight 4-0 pitchers’ dual to Tyrone, the Dragons were pummeled at Penns Valley 17-2.

Tyrone 4, CHS 0

Pitchers for both Central and Tyrone were locked in early as the game was scoreless after four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, the Golden Eagles tallied four runs and were able to keep the Dragons off the scoreboard. Central was outhit 9-4 in the loss and had trouble sustaining any momentum. The Dragons did get two men on in the seventh but were unable to dent the scoreboard.

Dylan Focht was the hard-luck loser as he struck out two and walked three. Jacob Ebersole threw in relief striking out one and also walking one. All four of the Dragon hits were singles.

PV 17, CHS 2

On April 18, the Dragons traveled to Penns Valley looking to sweep the Rams. Central had defeated PV 3-1 earlier in the season, but Penns Valley combined 12 hits, five Dragon errors and six free passes to end the game in just four innings. The Rams scored four times in the first, twice in the second and exploded for 11 in the fourth.

Paxton Kling and Ty Helsel had the only two Dragon hits as Penns Valley pitching struck out six batters. Jason Ferry took the loss on the mound, while Lleyton Kling and Jacob Eberlin also threw for the Dragons.

“It wasn’t very good for us in any area,” Central coach A.J. Hoenstine said. “We only had six hits in two games and they were all singles. Our defense was solid against Tyrone but poor against Penns Valley. Once Penns Valley got a comfortable lead we couldn’t find a way to get the third out.

We’re a little banged up right now and we’re searching for answers. Our staff will get together and find away to right the ship. We started 7-1 so we know we have the ability to play better baseball and that’s the plan.”
