BCGC to Meet May 16

The Blair County Genealogical Society, Hollidaysburg, will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 16.

The guest speaker will be Dr Robin Cadwallader. She will discuss Mary Rankin’s “The Daughter of Affliction.”

“The Daughter of Affliction” is a religious memoir first published in 1858 by a rural, west-central Pennsylvania woman. The text was expanded and reprinted in 1871 and 1887. In her memoir, Mary Rankin reflects on her “protracted sufferings and religious experience.” She also makes reference to many religious, social, and political happenings of her day, such as camp meetings, county fairs, the Civil War, and Lincoln’s assassination. Additionally, her detailed descriptions of the medical treatments she received provide direct insight into the medical practices of the mid-nineteenth century.

Dr. Cadwallader, professor of English, teaches American literature and theory at Saint Francis University, Loretto. She has published and presented papers on 19th-century women writers and culture. Dr. Cadwallader is the president and co-founder of The Society for the Study of Rebecca Harding Davis and Her World. Her other books include a collection of Rebecca Harding Davis’s Civil War stories, which she co-edited with Dr. Sharon M. Harris.

The meeting is free and open to the public.

The genealogical society is located at 431 Scotch Valley Road, Hollidaysburg.
