First Commencement Held

Herald of May 3, 1894

The first commencement of the Martinsburg Public School was held on May 1 at the Martinsburg Methodist Episcopal Church, with a graduating class consisting of five women and two men. All the graduates had an active role in the exercises. They were Myrtle Brown, Lola Deford, Clyde Chaplin, Emma Magaree, Alverda Lykens, Percy Snowberger and Margaret Nicodemus. Most gave speeches or recited poems. Miss Magaree sang a solo, accompanied by the school orchestra.

Two young boys from Martinsburg left their homes in a runaway attempt. The pair, Howard Nicodemus and Harry Crissman, traveled as far as Bedford before they were stopped. The boys, whose ages were not given, said they intended to go to South Carolina.

Memorial Day preparations were underway in many communities. Leading the commemoration in Roaring Spring were E.Z. Kagarise of Roaring Spring and Captain Johnson of Altoona. Major A. Bobb was to be the speaker for the East Sharpsburg services and was in charge of the Martinsburg program.
