Fire Destroys Dairy Barn

Herald of May 19, 1994

An early morning fire Monday destroyed a large dairy barn on the farm of Rufus L. Zimmerman of New Enterprise RD. The Zimmermans, who are Old Order Mennonites, live along Furry Drive, off Route 868 in Bloomfield Township on the former Galen Furry farm. Brian Walter, fire chief of the Southern Cove Volunteer Fire Co., said the cause of the blaze apparently was electrical, probably caused by a short-circuit in a fuse box. Walter estimated the damage of $70,000. Zimmerman said the firemen arrived “just in the nick of time” to save the milk house near the barn.

The Spring Cove baseball team, coached by Denny Cowher, finished its season with a perfect 11-0 record. The 11 wins push the Spring Cove winning streak to a remarkable 77 games.

Roaring Spring is in line for a $42,400 grant to build a canopy over the platform at the Roaring Spring Railroad Station. The money for the canopy is expected through PennDOT as part of a $55 million federal transportation enhancement program.
