Loysburg Bridge Named in Honor of Vietnam Vet

Mary Greenleaf, sister of Lance Cpl. Darrell Magruder, and State Rep. Jesse Topper, unveil the sign to officially name the bridge over Three Springs Run in honor of the fallen Marine.

The Vietnam War began in 1955, when Darrell Magruder, of New Enterprise, was just 11 years old. A little over 10 years later, Magruder would lose his life fighting in that same war.

In mid-April 1966, Magruder, a Lance Cpl. with the United States Marines, was on patrol with his unit in Da Nang, clearing the roads of landmines. One fateful step detonated a buried mine, sending shrapnel through the young Marine, causing serious injuries.

According to his family, Magruder was to be flown back to the United States, to a Philadelphia hospital for treatment. He never made it. Magruder died in Vi...
