A Barn Raising Event

Herald of June 27, 1919

The community event of the season was the barn raising on the farm of D. R. Earlenbaugh on Piney Creek, now tenanted by Herman Smith. Wednesday of last week was the day and early in the morning neighbors and friends began to gather for the days work. In all about 225 from far and near were present during the day to assist at the work, the ladies in the culinary department and the gentlemen at the construction work. Everything went along nicely throughout the day and the barn was raised to the rafters without mishaps.

On Sunday, June 22, at the home of George Clouse of Woodbury, a complete surprise was given in honor of their son, Elwood. This young man attended church services, returning home to find that about eighty-five people had gathered to give him a complete surprise. Elwood just returned from overseas where he spent over a year on the battlefields of France, serving as a member of the 80th division, 305th engineers. The day was very pleasantly spent in social conversation and partaking in dinner.
