"Daisy Jones & The Six" By Taylor Jenkins Reid

"Daisy Jones & The Six"

By Taylor Jenkins Reid

If you are of a certain age, or are a follower of the '70s music scene, you will love this book. The author, Taylor Jenkins Reid, is a fan of Stevie Nicks and Fleetwood Mac, and the novel is loosely based on the band and others of the period.

This book is written in an unusual format and reads like a Netflix documentary with interviews of all the characters – band members, spouses, producers. It doesn't take long for the format to become familiar to the reader and for the reader to lose themselves in the story.

Daisy Jones and Billy Dunne represent everything about that time period of "sex, drugs and rock and roll." These characters quickly become important to each other and the success of the band. However, both characters teeter on self-destruction, both personally and professionally. Daisy and Billy struggle with drug and alcohol abuse, relationships with their significant others including fellow band members, and the tension filled love/hate relationship between each other.

The novel also looks at the roles of men and women during the '70s. Characters struggle with society's expectations of marriage and family, especially the female characters.

Reese Witherspoon will be developing an Amazon series based on the novel. If you are like this reviewer, I love to read a novel before watching the resulting movie or series. I highly recommend that you pick up "Daisy Jones & the Six" at Martinsburg Community Library.
