Little Miss Morrisons Cove

Herald of July 3, 2009

Approximately 200 people were present Monday night at the Little Miss Morrisons Cove pageant to see Brooke Gochnour crowned in the first event of Morrisons Cove Fourth of July week activities at Memorial Park. Twenty young ladies aged six to 11 appeared before Crystal Nicodemus, master of ceremonies. They were judged on personality, smile, appearance and how they responded to brief interviews.

Thunderstorms with severe lightning kept the Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Department busy during the morning on Friday, June 22. The department received three calls in just under 10 minutes that day, including a barn destroyed by lightning. Fire Chief Randy Acker said the first call came at 1:07 a.m. for a reported transformer fire in the area of BCO Mart, east of Martinsburg along Route 164. Chief Acker said he and his crew could not find any fire, though he noted that the fire may have been out before the company arrived on scene. According to Penelec, power was restored to approximately 730 customers within five minutes of the strike.
