Kyler Found Guilty

Herald of July 5, 1894

Following a two-day trial, J. Frank Kyler of Roaring Spring was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter in the shooting death of William Butler on March 22. Kyler shot Butler from the window of a Martinsburg home when the victim entered the yard near midnight. The jury’s verdict included a recommendation for mercy. Kyler faced a maximum sentence of 12 years and a fine of $1,000.

A bridge near Mount Etna that had been damaged by high water in the late spring floods was repaired.

Oil was discovered on the A.B. Hicks property in Duncansville. No estimate was made about how much oil the strike might produce.

The coal strike ended quickly in southcentral Pennsylvania when the mine operators agreed to the strikers’ terms of 40 cents per net ton and 45 cents per gross ton. In other areas of the state, the strike continued and violence was escalating.

The Pennsylvania National Guard was called to Punxsutawney when the sheriff’s department could not control the strikers.
