Area Soldiers Memorial

Herald of July 11, 1919

Martinsburg Borough, North Woodbury, Huston and Taylor townships should join in a permanent memorial. Why not? There is a little flower that blooms in its beauty; we call it the Forget-me-Not. One little act in life may be a perpetual Forget-me-Not. And when the deeds of hundreds of loyal hearts are woven into permanent memorial, the noblest traits of human lives are made manifest in visible form. When the boys of this place and surrounding townships embarked for overseas, they did not say much; they only looked back a moment and then turned their faces toward the red skies on Eastern shores. Their looks as they went away meant more than words. Their looks said to us all: “If we do, or do not come back, do not forget us.”

Instead of the farmers picnic at Henrietta as has been the custom for a number of years, it will be held at Martinsburg this year. The proceeds will be applied to the memorial to be erected on the point of the Park in front of Dilling’s store, in memory of the boys who made the supreme sacrifice.
