Cholera Epidemic in the Cove
Herald of Aug. 2, 1894
Cholera infantum was epidemic among the children in Henrietta. Two victims who died from the disease were the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Weyandt and the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kauffman.
Also, in four days, four young children in the Williamsburg area died. They were the infant child of Andrew Lantzer; Willie, son of Frank P. Lantzer; the infant son of Robert Patterson; and the infant child of Elmer Miller. It was not known whether the deaths in the Williamsburg area were related to the cholera epidemic.
In East Sharpsburg, several cases of typhoid fever were reported.
The wheat crop in the area was reported to have been “one of the finest ever harvested.”
The widow of the late Rev. Daniel Holsinger died at the home of Daniel Rile of Fredericksburg at the age of 83. She was the sister of the Rev. Solomon Ritz, who once pastored a Lutheran church in the Cove area. She was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Martinsburg for more than 50 years.
