Woman Frightens Thieves

Herald of Aug. 16, 1894

Two tramps camping in the cornfields of Isaac Diehl near Henrietta went to the Diehl home during the day while the men were all at work in the fields. The men, intent upon burglary, were met at the door by Mrs. Levi Diehl, who ordered them to leave. When the tramps refused, she got a revolver and threatened to shoot them. When the tramps laughed at her threats, Mrs. Diehl pulled the hammer on the pistol, which misfired. Her action, however, was enough to frighten the would-be thieves, who fled the area, leaving their belongings behind.

Susannah Rice, widow of the late David Rice, died at her Taylor Township home at the age of 84. Mrs. Rice and her husband were among the pioneers of the Cove, and the Rice family homestead was known throughout the county for its historical significance. Mrs. Rice, who lived in Taylor Township for more than 46 years, was survived by six children, four of who resided in the Cove.

Small fires from lightning storms were reported in several areas of the Cove during the week.
