When Dwight D. Eisenhower became President of the United States in 1953, America was less than a decade removed from the end of World War II.

In the aftermath of the war, the United States became a global superpower both economically and in its influence over the rest of the world. While the 1950s were a time of great prosperity in America, the growing threat of communism and the cold war it brought ushered in a period of suspicion that threatened to isolate different parts of the world from each other.
