The Central Lady Dragon tennis team opened the 2019 season with two scheduled non-league matches and one in the Mountain Conference. The Lady Dragons were defeated by Altoona, victorious over Tyrone and had their match with Hollidaysburg stopped due to poor weather conditions.
Altoona 7, CHS 0
Central opened its season at Mansion Park in Altoona Aug. 19 against one of the stronger area teams and fell by a 7-0 score. Although each of their top five girls battled gamely, none was able to win more than two of their games.
In doubles action, Lindsey Kensinger and Kierra Mountain lost 8-6 while Aleah Trueman and Tomi May fell 8-5.
CHS 5, Tyrone 2
On Aug. 21, the Lady Dragons hosted Tyrone in a league game, played on their updated courts, and won impressively 5-2.
After Lindsey Kensinger fell in three sets 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, Kierra Mountain evened the score with a 6-1, 6-1 victory. Aleah Trueman put the Dragons ahead to stay with a 6-3, 6-2 victory before Tomi May increased the lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win. In the final singles match Allison Brooks lost a close match 6-4, 6-4.
The Lady Dragons controlled the doubles matches with identical 8-2 victories. Kensinger and Trueman combined for the first win while Mountain and May won the other.
“Altoona is a tough season opener, but it’s good to get the first match jitters out of the way,” Central coach John Reilly said. “It was really hot conditions for both teams. All of our girls battled hard against a very talented Altoona team. This match helped us as we prepared for a big league match against Tyrone.
“The win over Tyrone on the new courts was special. It’s a great way to open league play. Again, the girls were all solid – in victory and in defeat. Both doubles teams were dominant.”
CHS 5, Windber 2
The Central Lady Dragon tennis team improved its record to 2-1 on the season with a strong outing against visiting Windber Aug. 26. The Lady Dragons prevailed 5-2 after falling behind 2-1.
In the opening match, the Dragons No.-1 position player, Lindsey Kensinger, lost by a thrilling 6-3, 2-6, 9-11 score. Kierra Mountain evened the score with a 6-2, 7-5 victory.
Aleah Trueman fell 3-6, 4-6 before Tomi May again got Central even with a 6-2, 6-2 win. Allison Brooks put the Dragons ahead for good with a lopsided 6-1, 6-1 victory.
In doubles, Kensinger and May won a tight match 8-6 followed by an 8-2 win by Mountain and Trueman.
“This was a great team win over a solid Windber team,” Central coach John Riley said. “It was a heartbreaking loss for Lindsey and a tough one for Aleah also. The other girls dominated overall and the doubles teams excelled. It’s always nice to get wins outside the conference. This should give the girls added confidence going forward.
Exhibition winners included Reagan Bush, Kaylee McClain, Miranda Madden and Ellen Kennedy.
