Valley Proves to Be Too Much for Central

The Scarlet Dragons traveled to Penns Valley (3-1) last Friday with the hopes of slowing down the high-powered Rams’ offense. Penns Valley entered the game averaging more than 50 points per game and six touchdown passes per game.

Penns Valley broke open a tight game at halftime and went on to secure a 41-21 victory.

The visitors gave PV all they could handle in the opening half and trailed just 19-14 at intermission. After Penns Valley scored in the opening quarter, Jeff Hoenstine raced into the end zone from 2 yards out to knot the score. Penns Valley scored just 23 seconds later and led 13-7 after one quarter.

After the Rams opened up a 19-7 advantage, Braden Kitt connected with Dalton Metzger on a 33-yard aerial, just 13 seconds before the halftime gun.

After intermission, Penns Valley was able to take control of the game. PV scored three times through the air – giving them six passing scores – before a late 16-yard Kitt to Hunter Klotz pass play ended the scoring.

Penns Valley finished with a 24-15 advantage in first downs and a 489-270 advantage in total yards. Central was held to just 25 yards on the ground on 27 attempts but totaled 245 yards through the air. Kitt connected on 11-of-13 passing attempts for 133 yards, with Klotz snaring seven for 58 yards. Josh Biesinger had 4 catches for 96 yards.

“Penns Valley has an excellent team – better than Clearfield I believe,” Central coach Dave Baker said. “We hung around but eventually they were able to take over. Braden made some nice throws and overall we caught the ball well but we couldn’t get anything going on the ground.”

Central will look to rebound from two consecutive defeats when it travels to Bald Eagle Area (3-1) Friday, Sept. 20. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Bald Eagle Area sits atop the District 6 Class 3A rankings with 85 points. Central is tied for third with 55 points with Central Cambria (2-2) and Tyrone (2-2).
