Local Cadet Honored

Herald of Sept. 25,1969

Cadet Burton K. Ake, son of Mr. and Mrs. Denver K. Ake of Martinsburg RD2, is one of more than 750 cadets who have entered their senior year at the U.S. Air Force Academy. As he began his fourth year at the Academy, Cadet Ake was named to the Superintendent’s list for outstanding achievement in both academic and military performance. He will be granted special privileges and wear a silverstar and wreath insignia recognizing the honor accorded him by the academy superintendent.

The Martinsburg Community Fund campaign for 1969 opened Tuesday night with one-tenth of its $10,000 goal ready to be deposited. During the kick-off dinner at Memorial Park, a check for $1,000 from the employees of the Martinsburg Shoe Co. was presented by Mrs. Edna Adams, president of Local 147 of the Boot and Shoe Worker’s Union, to John H. Waite, general campaign chairman. The dinner was attended by nearly 50 campaign workers, who were urged to start their door-to door solicitations to help reach its goal.
