Ice Skating Possibility

Herald of Sept. 28, 1944

A project that will combine utility and beauty has been started on the old Ashcom farm, now owned by Dr. J.W. Hershberger, Martinsburg physician.

Three large fish dams are being constructed along the highway leading to the airport just outside the borough. In years gone by several dams were located at this site, but had become filled up so that the area was little more than a swamp.

Dr. Hershberger during the past week had a large “bulldozer” in operation at the site, and the ground was scooped out and the banks for the dams built up. The dams will be fed by a spring on the farm as well as the small stream coming from the pond on the Hinton farm across the highway.

Dr. Hershberger told The Herald that if some responsible organization would act as sponsor, the dams in winter would be thrown open for ice skating for the young folks of Martinsburg and vicinity. Good ice skating is a pleasure that has been denied most boys and girls of the community, except they travel some distance to do so.
