Sheetz Donation to Help Greenfield Township

October 10, 2019

A $5,000 donation from the Sheetz Distribution Center and its employees will help Greenfield Township outfit the Claysburg Area Community Park with new picnic tables. Township supervisors discussed the donation at the Oct. 1 meeting.

The township has been replacing fiberglass tables in the park’s pavilions with ones made of a more durable coated steel. Supervisors voted to spend an additional $6,429 to complete the project. In total, $11,429 will be spent to purchase 16 tables from TreeTop Products.

Matt Treon, board chairman, thanked Sheetz for its support and said the organization is “always willing to help and make the community better.”

Three updated ordinances, introduced in August, were approved by supervisors. A revised nuisance ordinance eliminates the need for a public hearing to discuss issues such as grass that is too tall. A red-tag ordinance, formerly part of the nuisance ordinance, now focuses on dangerous structures. A third ordinance focuses on fire insurance escrow. If a structure burns down, insurance money will be placed in a township-managed escrow until the building is demolished properly.

A new zero-turn lawnmower will be purchased from J&M Lawnmower Service, East Freedom, for $8,159. The mower will replace one used at the community park. The purchase of a new AR-15 semi-automatic rifle from Sporting Goods Discounters, Johnstown, was approved. The acquisition will allow all Greenfield Township Police Department vehicles to carry both rifles and shotguns.

Supervisors rescinded a motion made in September for a natural gas boiler system, as the quote was not for a commercial boiler as requested. The supervisors plan to wait until after the heating season to proceed.

The annual Halloween parade is scheduled for 1 to 3 p.m. Oct. 19. Trick-or-Treat night will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 31.

The township office will be closed on Election Day, Nov. 5. The regular township meeting will be held the following day, Nov. 6.
