Fire Take Farm House

Herald of Oct. 19, 1944

In one of the most stubborn fires known in the central section of the Cove for years, the nearly 80-year-old 9-room solid brick farm dwelling of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin Wareham in Taylor township, a half mile west of Pecks Station and three miles southwest of Martinsburg, was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. The loss, it is estimated, to building and contents will be between $8,000 and $10,000. Insurance to the amount of $2,400 was carried on the building, but there was no insurance on the household goods, furnishings and personal belongings which were destroyed and which will entail a loss of fully $3,000. The Martinsburg firemen were called a few minutes before 3 o’clock and remained on the scene until 10:30 o’clock in the evening. The Roaring Spring firemen arrived shortly before 5 o’clock and remained on guard at the barn in case that the wind should turn and sparks fly in that direction.

Five years ago a Girl Scout troop was organized in Martinsburg and the fifth anniversary will be observed with a banquet.
