Martinsburg Firemen Teach Children About Fire Prevention

The Martinsburg Volunteer Fire Company, in honor of Fire Prevention Week, set up at Long's Outpost in Martinsburg on Saturday, Oct. 19.

Two fire trucks were on site for children to sit in and explore. Firefighters were on hand to assist the children and to discuss fire safety.

Fire Chief Randy Acker passed out fire hats, coloring books, slap bracelets, stickers and pencils to the children. He also discussed with the children what the firefighters do. He explained it is not all about running into burning buildings.

"Kids need to understand what we do," Acker said. "We try to explain we are just normal people here to help the community. We do not want them to be afraid of us with our fire attire on. Our goal is always to assure everyone got out OK. Of course, we do stress having smoke detectors and carbon dioxide detectors in place and in working order."

Folks enjoyed looking at the fire trucks and talking with the firemen.

The Martinsburg Fire Company has been around for 127 years as of July. Chief Acker explained the company has more than 200 calls a year.

Long's served refreshments inside the store, and there was an opportunity to sign up for a door prize.
