St. Matthew Names Accompanist

St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Martinsburg will welcome Adam Smith as the new accompanist for its worship services on Sunday, Nov. 10.

Smith is currently on the music staff of Penn State University in State College. He has had years of experience as a worship accompanist in a variety of congregations mostly in Texas.

St. Matthew is rebuilding its adult choir program with the intent to incorporate early 20th-century gospel music with 21st century Christian music. To that end the church recently hired its former pastor, Ed Harshbarger, to lead the adult choir and coordinate the children and youth music programs. Pastor Harshbarger said he looks forward to adding to the services the talents of our young people who play various instruments.

Sensitive to the time constraints of many talented musicians, the adult choir will have a formal rehearsal one hour a month on Sunday mornings at 9:15. If you enjoy singing and would like to become part of this new program at St. Matthew you may either call the church office, 793-2413, or just show up this Sunday morning (Nov. 10) at 9:15 for the first rehearsal with Adam Smith. On other Sundays we will meet just prior to the 10:30 a.m. service for a warmup and final rehearsal of that Sunday’s anthem.

Pastor Traci Marriot Bowman just celebrated her first anniversary as the congregation’s pastor. Pastor Bowman has been active for a number of years in youth programs in the Allegheny Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Young people from St. Matthew are now being drawn into those programs.

St. Matthew is looking forward to a bright future with new and energetic leadership in all fields of service.

St. Matthew is located at the corner of E. Penn and Wood Lawn Streets in Martinsburg.
