The Central Dragon boys' basketball team opened the 2019-2020 season with a solid 57-36 victory over visiting Williamsburg on Dec. 6.

The Dragons started strong offensively, taking a 19-11 lead after one quarter. The Blue Pirates responded with a 15-11 second frame and trailed just 30-26 at intermission.

The Dragons took control defensively in the second half and held Williamsburg to just 10 points in the final two quarters. Meanwhile, Central was putting 27 points on the board to win decisively 57-36.

Central senior Braden Kitt sparked the offense with 25 points, which included three baskets from beyond the arc. Kitt also led the team with four assists.

Junior Hunter Klotz paced the Dragons with 10 rebounds and four steals, while sophomore Devin Boyles added eight boards. Senior Jacob Eberlin scored seven points, while Klotz and Boyles had six apiece.

Williamsburg was led by Drew Hileman's 11 points, which included three 3-pointers. Josiah Dowey added eight points, including two 3-pointers.

Williamsburg finished with seven 3-point baskets, seven two-point baskets and hit just one of five from the foul line. The Dragons finished 7 of 17 from the charity stripe.

In Junior Varsity action, Central won 63-32 with Cassimier Lowery tallying 18 points. Aidan Frew had 13 for the Pirates.

"I thought we played well in the first quarter," first-year Central coach Paul Frederick said. "We moved the ball well and capitalized on some second chance opportunities. Give Williamsburg credit though. They fought back and took it to us for a while. I liked the way our kids handled the adversity.

"Overall it was a nice way to start the season."

Said Williamsburg coach Brock Anders," I was proud of our first-half effort against a tall and physical team in Central. We needed to value the ball a little better in the second half and finish the easy opportunities we had. There were many positives we can build on from this defeat."

Central, which played Penns Valley on Dec. 9 and Everett Dec. 10, will host Bald Eagle Area on Dec. 13 and Chestnut Ridge on Dec. 16. The Dragons will travel to Bellefonte on Dec. 18.

Williamsburg, which played Claysburg-Kimmel on Dec. 9, will entertain Moshannon Valley today, Dec. 12. The Blue Pirates will travel to Portage on Dec. 13, then host Juniata Valley on Dec. 16. WHS will go on the road to Saint Joseph's on Dec. 17 and to McConnellsburg on Dec. 19.
