Catharine Twp. Re-Dedicates 2020 Ambulance Service Budget to Its Reserve Fund

Series: Williamsburg | Story 11

December 26, 2019

“You can’t continue to operate without raising millage, or you’re going to face bankruptcy,” Catharine Township Auditor Daryl Cole told the township supervisors during the regular meeting last Thursday evening, Dec. 21.

“You have no reserve and you can’t put weight on grants,” Cole said.

Cole made note of the $20,000 deficit between real and projected numbers in the budget regarding payroll. Supervisors cited paying for two secretaries in the last year as the reason for a higher than expected payroll, which totaled more than $67,000.

Catharine Township pays one-half mill to the Williamsburg Ambulance service, which equals about $1,600 annually. The ambulance service will be closing at the end of the year. The supervisors decided that instead of raising real estate taxes, that the one-half mill that would have been given to the ambulance service would instead be allocated to the reserve account.

A motion to that effect was made by supervisors Chairman Ken Brenneman with Supervisor Ralph Rispoli seconding. The motion passed.

Supervisor Heather Flaig made a motion to approve the 2020 budget which had been properly advertised. Supervisor Rispoli seconded and the motion passed.

Jessica Sorge, executive director of the Hollidaysburg American Legion Ambulance Service (HALAS), was present to discuss ambulance company memberships and address questions pertaining to the closing of the Williamsburg ambulance service

Supervisors instructed Sorge to prepare an agreement that makes the Hollidaysburg ambulance service the first-in-line ambulance service for Catharine Township in 2020. Sorge promised that the agreement would be ready for the next month’s meeting.

The Catharine Township reorganizational meeting will be held at 5 p.m. Monday, Jan 6.
