Coal Shortage At Schools

Herald of Feb. 1, 1945

With less than two tons of coal in the cellar, the 250 or more pupils of the Martinsburg schools were sent to their homes at 12:30 o’clock Wednesday noon and the building closed for the remainder of the day. A forenoon session was being held today, but it was announced that a full day session would be held Friday, and all of next week so far as known, as an additional supply of coal has been delivered. From 1/2 to 3/4 of a ton of coal is needed to keep the rooms warm when school is in session the full day.
