The Herald featured Carl A. Shultz, easily recognizable as the affable auctioneer in demand for five decades throughout Blair County. With his 76th birthday approaching, Shultz decided to retire. Shultz and his wife lived on a farm at Williamsburg RD 1 in the Cove Forge area.

Sandra Young has been named housing manager of Williamsburg Area Improved Dwellings (WAID). She succeeded Mary Jane Hughes, who retired Jan. 27 after serving as manager since the formation of WAID about 1980.

Claysburg-Kimmel High School junior Jonathan O’Harrow, son of Mary Lee O’Harrow and James O’Harrow, won the Veterans of Foreign Wars District 22 speech competition to advance to the state championship. More than 10,000 youths took part in the VFW contests in 300 high schools in Pennsylvania.

The Williamsburg boys’ basketball team defeated West Branch 84-73. Joe Zehner led the Blue Pirates with 20 points, leaving him two points shy of the 1,000-point plateau. Justin Becker added 20 points.
