Because clearing the driveway during a blizzard may be the perfect storm for a cardiac event, Conemaugh Nason Medical Center and Roaring Spring True Value have partnered for a special promotion to celebrate American Heart Month.
Conemaugh Nason provided special tags to be placed on the snow shovels that are for sale at Roaring Spring True Value. The tags include Heart Health tips for use during winter months. The tags encourage safety when shoveling snow. In addition to the Heart Healthy tips, each person who purchases a snow shovel from Roaring Spring True Value will be entered into a drawing for a $100 True Value Gift Card, courtesy of Conemaugh Nason Medical Center.
While shoveling snow, the combination of cold temperatures and strenuous exercise can trigger a heart attack. According to the CDC, there are about 11,500 injuries and 100 people die during or just after shoveling snow each year in the US.
Also, if you feel ill or develop shortness of breath, chest discomfort, lightheadedness (or dizziness), heart palpitations, jaw pain, arm pain/numbness, leg cramps, or tightness in the lungs – stop shoveling. If the symptoms persist after three to five minutes of rest, seek medical attention immediately.
Remember that being physically fit lowers your risk from cardiac disease, and regular exercise is highly recommended for most individuals. That being said, be cautious and get sound advice from your physician if in doubt. For most people, regular exercise (including both aerobic and strength) will enhance your quality of life – and make your future shoveling much easier – and safer, too.
