Claysburg Trivia Night Deemed a Huge Success

Claysburg P.A.S.T., the history group, teamed with the Claysburg Volunteer Fire Company to promote a Trivia Night Contest and turkey and ham dinner with refreshments on Saturday, Feb. 29, at the Greenfield Township Center.

This was the seventh annual trivia night with all seven years benefitting the Claysburg Volunteer Fire Company. Combined profits for this event are still being tallied, but every year is a great financial success.

After a complete turkey and ham dinner with all the fixings, chips, snacks, appetizers and pretzels, a full line of desserts and refreshments for the entire evening, there were 21 teams competing with 141 people who purchased tickets plus an additional 20 volunteers working.

There were some spectators who were not participating and cheering on others. While the P.A.S.T. group was in charge of the cooking and the trivia contest, the firemen kicked in manning the setup of the facilities, cleaning up, doing raffles and in their usual style assisting wherever there was a need.

The P.A.S.T. group and firemen have a history of working together on fundraisers with a lot of success.

There were four rounds of questions with a grand total of 48 questions covering a broad range of subjects. Each team could consist of one to eight members. After each of the four rounds, all of the teams’ cumulative results were announced, and as the rounds progressed so did the points for each correct answer.

John and Elaine Smith headed up the committee and organized it. A support team of judges, computer data entry, announcer and spotters of approximately 10 people rounded out the workers as well as approximately 10 members of the fire company were there lending a hand.

In the final tally, the following four groups were the top winners:

$150 first-place team – Dead Parrots

$125 second-place team – The Murder of Crows

$100 third-place team – Dot and Mearl’s Kin

$75 fourth-place team – Beauties and the Beasts

Other random drawings of cash prize winners were:

$100 cash winner – Doug Ebersole

$75 cash winner – Jackie Eberhart

$50 cash winner – Jeanine Romeowicz

There were also five $20 cash winners, four $25 first-place round cash winners plus 17 other prizes awarded.

The price for the evening was $20 per person. Games of chance were operated by the Claysburg Fire Company and some people returned their winnings to the fire company coffers.

The committee thanked Thrivent Financial for the donation obtained for the purchase of food, beverages and paper products.

From the noise and laughter, the participants thoroughly enjoyed the evening’s events. As the evening crowd was breaking up after the four hours of activities, one of the team’s members approached one of the organizers to make certain that there would be a Trivia 2021. It was confirmed in town that the organizing committee will have an eighth annual trivia night, scheduled for Feb. 27, 2021.
