Dixon Retires

Herald of March 8, 1945

Between 20 and 30 farm boys from the Blair county end of the Cove went to the induction center at Harrisburg on Tuesday to take their first test for army service.

Whether the boys are ushered into the army at an early date or be granted farm deferment for the summer, is said to depend largely on the action of the Blair county, No. 1, draft board at Hollidaysburg.

They are liable to be called for military duty in 21 days.

After a service of 51 years in the telephone, telegraph and electric industries, John W. Dixon of South Market Street, Martinsburg, went on the pension rolls of the United Telephone company of Pennsylvania after 15 years of service.

Sgt. Mark Hanna Bulger of Woodbury has been in the armed service three years, and half of that time has been spent overseas. At present, he is located in China as a member of the 14th Air Force, which is known as the Flying Tigers.

In a recent letter to his parents he stated he is well and getting along all right, but gets his mail very irregularly.
