Fire Destroys Home

Herald of March 29, 1945

A fire destroyed the Smith home along the Plum Creek Road leading from the Five Points in Roaring Spring to the former Plum Creek school building. The Smith place is about a mile northeast of the town. Mrs. Dorothy McGregor and Thaddeus W. Smith both died of burns sustained in the Monday morning fire.

Pvt. Melvin Rhodes, Jr. of Martinsburg, who is somewhere in France or Germany with the 343rd Engineers of the Army, has been awarded the Silver Star.

Pfc. Cecil P. Wierman of Martinsburg, who has been with the Ninth Army in Germany but who early last week arrived at New York, is now a patient at the Ashburn General Hospital in McKinney, Tex. The soldier was taken by train through Altoona Friday night but had no opportunity to notify his family that he would be so near his home. The train stopped but a minute or two.

The Daniel D. Stolzfus family, who last November went to Hesston, Kan. to live, are returning to the Cove for the summer. The Wilbur Replogle family has resided in the farm dwelling since last fall.
