State Police Warn of Man Impersonating Trooper

Fake Trooper Conducted Traffic Stops in Hopewell Township

Pennsylvania State Police, Bedford, is investigating reports of someone impersonating a police officer.

According to police, at 10:30 p.m., April 1, a white male described as being between 30 and 40 years old, with a goatee, wearing a dark-blue uniform, a campaign hat and black-framed glasses stopped a vehicle on the State Route 26 corridor between the area of Yellow Creek and Riddlesburg, Hopewell Township, Bedford County. He then made another stop at 2:30 p.m., April 2.

The suspect was driving an unmarked sedan with a red-and-blue emergency police package light system which was activated during the traffic stops.

Any persons with information regarding the above incidents are asked to contact PSP Bedford Station at (814) 623-6133.

The area of this incident is under the jurisdiction of the Pennsylvania State Police. Troopers assigned to the patrol unit operate marked PSP patrol units. Regardless of rank, all patrol members are in full uniform when on patrol. The PSP uniform consists of a dark gray campaign hat, light gray shirt and dark pants.

PSP sergeants, corporals and troopers assigned to the Crime Unit operate unmarked patrol units. If not in uniform, they are required to be dressed in business attire and have on their person a badge that is easily observed by the public.

Regardless of unit or uniform, PSP troopers are not permitted to have facial hair.

Those who suspect that they are being stopped by an unauthorized person impersonating a police officer should remain inside their vehicle and call 9-1-1. Dispatchers should be able to inform the caller if a legitimate police agency is conducting the traffic stop.
