President Dies

Herald of April 19, 1945

President Franklin D. Roosevelt died Thursday April 12, at 3:45 following a cerebral hemmorrhage suffered at 1:00 the same afternoon.

During the hour of the funeral of the president business places in Martinsburg were closed. During the day flags were at half mast. On Sunday, special services were held in a number of the churches.

Pvt. James R. Miller and Cpl. Kenneth H. Miller, sons of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Miller of W. Allegheny St., had a happy surprise when they suddenly came face to face on the battle grounds of Germany.

James was just going back to his outfit from a Red Cross truck and happened to see a truck on which was Kenneth’s company number. He was just about to stop the truck to inquire about his brother when he saw Kenneth and at the same time Kenneth saw him. It surely was a happy reunion.

Mrs. Mary Kauffman, wife of Albert, and whose home is near the Pleasant Grove Mennonite church a mile southwest of Bossler station, was badly injured when she fell down a flight of steps.
