Roger S. Bowers

Roger S. Bowers, 96, of Roaring Spring, passed away on Saturday, May 2, 2020, at the James E. Van Zandt VA Medical Center, Altoona, of natural causes.

He was born in Roaring Spring, the son of the late Charles and Malvina (Snyder) Bowers. He married Carmita J. "Mitzi" Johnson on June 5, 1948. She preceded him in death on July 17, 2014.

Roger is survived by his son, Dwight Bowers and fiancee Cindy Dick of Imler; two grandchildren: Brian Bowers and wife Michele and Natasha Bowers, all of Roaring Spring; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers: Bill and Dick.

Roger was a member of the Bare Memorial Church of God, Roaring Spring.

He retired from Appleton Papers in 1986 with more than 39 years of service.

Roger was a United States Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 103rd Medical Battalion, 28th Infantry Division in Europe. He was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and was a prisoner of war at Stalag IXB, Bad Orh, Germany.

Roger and his wife, Mitzi, were life members of AXPOW (American Ex-Prisoners of War) and charter members of the Southern Alleghenies chapter.

Roger enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling, having traveled with his wife to 47 states and 11 countries.

He was a member of the Murray-Appleman American Legion Post 147, Roaring Spring, and had volunteered for the American Red Cross Bloodmobiles.

Due to COVID-19 limitations, a private service will be held at the convenience of the family by Pastor Paul Johnson and Pastor Phil Waite.

Interment will be made in Holsinger Cemetery.

A public service with full military honors will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Roger's memory may be given to the Bare Memorial Church of God.
