The Martinsburg Community Yard Sale is still a possibility for this year.
The staff at the Morrisons Cove Herald usually coordinates the yard sale and this year will be no different.
Karen Bassler, Herald co-owner and staff writer, is working to make sure this much-anticipated event will still happen while maintaining coronavirus safety guidelines.
“Without knowing what the state of the pandemic will be at the end of June, it’s hard to make definite plans right now but we can still make plans,” Bassler said.
Keeping Blair County’s number of confirmed COVID-19 cases low is a big concern for many in this area. Simple, straightforward expectations for everyone involved is the best way to address these concerns, Bassler said.
A list of safety guidelines for buyers and sellers is being drawn up by the Herald so everyone involved will be informed of what might be expected at each individual yard sale. The guidelines will be based on recommendations from the Pa. Dept. of Health, Bassler said.
“If each seller posts their rules near the entrance of their sale and shoppers know where and what to look for there will be no awkward surprises,” she said. “The signs will be just a way to give each shopper a heads-up about what is expected before walking on to a property. Some sellers may require that everyone on the property wear a mask. Some sellers may allow only so many shoppers at a time on their property. It requires a bit more thought than any other year but I think the Cove community can handle it,” Bassler said.
It is not yet final, but the tentative date for the community yard sale is planned for Friday, June 26 and Saturday, June 27.
Nancy Barnett, coordinator of the annual Curryville Community Yard Sales, said that the Curryville event, which has been held on Memorial Day weekend for the past 41 years, has been postponed due to COVID-19.
“I think it would be best to join in with Martinsburg this year and have our sales the same weekend,” Barnett said.
Details of the combined community yard sales will be published in the Herald and on the Herald website, http://www.mcheraldonline.com.
