Authority Urges Customers to Stop Flushing Wipes

During the June 2 regular meeting of the Williamsburg Municipal Authority, Williamsburg Borough Manager Joe Lansberry brought up to authority members ongoing issues with grinder pumps caused by the flushing of baby wipes and similar materials.

Manager Lanberry said that items such as washcloths, baby wipes, netting and wipes labeled as "flushable" (but which are not flushable) have all been found in the pumps when the problems occur. Pump problems in turn cause other problems at the treatment facility, Lansberry said. These additional costs associated with the pumps and plant operations could force a rate increase, according to discussions at the meeting by authority members.

Stiffler McGraw engineer John Clabaugh discussed some of the issues with construction of the authority's four major projects caused by "material availability" due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Clabaugh cited some of the pumping stations as one of those projects.

Clabaugh also discussed issues related to changes in propane storage plans. Clabaugh asked authority members to make a decision on one of three ideas that would satisfy the project inspectors.

Authority voted to approve four 1,000-gallon propane tanks on a concrete slab for a total of $13,080, with the authority paying $12,000 of the total.

Authority Boardmember Daryl Cole made a motion to accept Suburban Propane as the provider with Boardmember Stan Grove seconding. The motion passed.
