Thirty-Four Students Earn Diplomas at Williamsburg
Applauses were car horns and attendees sat in cars circling the high school football field; "this is not the graduation we might have expected, but it's definitely one you will not forget," Michael Jones, Williamsburg High School principal, said welcoming the Class of 2020 to commencement activities on Friday, May 29. Jones joked that it was "20 years" since he graduated high school, and "it was nothing like this." Jones praised seniors for their tireless hours of hard work, "proud that we are able to have this graduation ceremony this year." Jones also recognized Kathy Yeager, high school secretary, who is retiring after many years in the high school office, joking, "She will be mad at me later for giving her this attention." Jones then announced Joseph Kunsman, the class valedictorian. Jones applauded Kunsman, for his active schedule in and out of the classroom but also in the Williamsburg community, most notably becoming one of the most recent Eagle Scouts. Kunsman congratulated classmates whether they were going to college, the military or "just" to the workforce. "I'm glad I had the chance to meet each and every one of you," he said. Kunsman closed his speech with a quote from his mother, "It's been real, it's been fun, but it hasn't been real fun." Saxton Smith was named class salutatorian. Smith said, "We are writing history in this time of uncertainty." Superintendent Lisa Murgas honored the nine honor students: Joseph Kunsman, Saxton Smith, Haley Tate, Chelsea Mathieu, Emily Smith, Dylan James, Adam Uplinger, Jared McCall and Kaitlin Ross. Murgas told the seniors, "We are here, not necessarily the way we thought, but we are here together." Dr. Barry England, president of the Williamsburg Community School Board, discussed with the Class of 2020 Romans 12: 6-8, "We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If you gift is prophesying, them prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully." England praised two seniors who will be enlisting in the military – Austin Kauruter and Zach Richardson. England closed his speech, with "Just be good." Students then pulled up in their cars and received their diplomas from Dr. England and Murgas. Thirty-four students received their diplomas, students also received their senior awards during this time. Following commencement exercises, students then participated in a parade around town for community congratulations. The Class of 2020 selected as their class song "We Run this Town," by Luke Bryan. The colors were royal blue, white and silver; the flower was the white rose, and the class motto was "Our lives are before us, our pasts are behind us, but our memories are forever in us."
