Cove Uses Community Yard Sale for a Sense of 'Normalcy'

The Cove community is not the only place using a community yard sale to revive a sense of normalcy.

Like the Cove Community Yard Sale, a community yard sale in Ridgway, Pa., is sponsored by the local newspaper.

For Christie Gardner, publisher of the Ridgway Record newspaper and long-time resident of the town, the annual community yard sale was that perfect event as Elk County went into the Green Phase.

The Ridgway community yard sale has been taking place since May 2010. The Ridgway community yard sale took place in mid- to late May each year, but the COVID-19 pandemic and related restrictions forced the town to postpone the event, and, initially, there was concern that it might be cancelled.

Similar to the situation in Morrisons Cove, those planning the yard sale initially thought that the event would have to be canceled. But when the county entered the Green Phase, it became possible.

Gardner said she and her team are "interested and hopeful" to see the community's response and that it appears positive and strong so far.

Gardner said of the town and her fellow citizens, "We're opening things up slowly and with the proper guidelines in place. And hopefully, the annual yard sale will be much the same. I think we're on the right path."

The Cove's community yard sale is scheduled for Friday, June 26, and Saturday, June 27. Both days, yard sales will start at 7 a.m. and run until the individual sellers want to close up.

Indications are that it might rain on Thursday, affecting setups, but Friday and Saturday should have a lot of sun.

The Herald is asking all yard sale participants, both sellers and buyers, to observe recommended coronavirus precautions. Each seller area will be able to set its own standards, such as requiring masks.

The Herald will have a yard sale site both days beside the Herald building at 113 N. Market St. in Martinsburg. The Herald will be requiring face masks and social distancing at the yard sale. Signs will be posted and people will be expected to follow the rules.

"If they don't want to follow our request then they will be asked to move on," Karen Bassler, owner of the Herald and mask advocate, said.

The Community Yard Sale will be the kick-off to what many hope to be the beginning of a mostly traditional July 4th week in the Cove.

The Little Miss Morrisons Cove Pageant is schedule for Monday, June 29.

A fireworks show has been confirmed for 10 p.m. Friday, July 3, at the Morrisons Cove Memorial Park.

The annual Ag Parade is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 30. The route will be different. For a map, see Page A-3 of the June 18 edition of the Herald or stop in the Herald office for a copy. The parade will be held rain or shine.

The Herald reminds parade watchers to get permission from the property owner before setting up chairs. Some of the new parade route lacks sidewalks.
